Music Therapy: Boosting Cognition in Cancer Patients
Recent research from the University of South Florida (USF) highlights the potential cognitive benefits of music training for individuals undergoing chemotherapy and those recovering from COVID-19.
Music Training During Chemotherapy
USF's study, in collaboration with Moffitt Cancer Center, is pioneering the integration of piano lessons into the treatment plans of chemotherapy patients. Led by Professor Jennifer Bugos and Dr. Melissa Mallory, the research examines how both private and group piano lessons can influence cognitive functions and daily activities during cancer treatment.
Preliminary findings indicate that participants receiving group piano lessons exhibit improved executive functions. Additionally, patients report that learning the piano provides enjoyment and relaxation, offering a positive distraction from the challenges of treatment.
Addressing Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment
Cognitive challenges, often referred to as "chemo brain," are common among chemotherapy patients, affecting memory, focus, and the ability to learn new information. The USF study suggests that music education interventions, such as piano training, may help mitigate these cognitive impairments, enhancing overall patient wellness without relying on medication.
Music's Role in COVID-19 Recovery
Expanding the scope of music's therapeutic potential, Professor Bugos conducted a pilot study involving adults recovering from COVID-19. Participants learned to play the JSax—a compact version of the saxophone—aiming to improve respiratory function and cognitive abilities.
The study observed that participants doubled their respiratory capacity and reduced error rates on cognitive tests. Improvements were also noted in inhibition and executive functions, suggesting that music training can be a valuable component of rehabilitation for COVID-19 survivors experiencing lingering cognitive and respiratory issues.
Implications and Future Research
These studies underscore the potential of music-based interventions as accessible, non-pharmacological strategies to enhance cognitive function and quality of life in individuals facing significant health challenges. By integrating music training into treatment and recovery programs, healthcare providers may offer patients a holistic approach to managing cognitive impairments associated with chemotherapy and COVID-19.
As research continues, the therapeutic applications of music may expand, providing innovative pathways to support mental and physical health across diverse patient populations.
