From Cancer to Purpose: How a Diagnosis Changed My Life

At 27, my life felt like a dream come true. I was married, had two beautiful children, a thriving career in the food service industry, and was about to buy my first home. Fast forward to 43, and I had experienced the highs and lows of life—divorce, a prosperous small business, and aspirations for new beginnings. I thought I had it all figured out, but life had other plans.

A Life-Altering Diagnosis

One day, driven by what I can only describe as divine intervention, I decided to get a complete physical. That decision changed everything. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The news hit me hard, especially when I learned that the cancer could be life-threatening if not treated promptly. The recommended course of action was a complete removal of the prostate, a surgery that came with risks of incontinence and impotence. It was a lot to process, but I knew I had no other choice if I wanted to survive.

A Pact with a Higher Power

As I was being wheeled into surgery, I made a pact with God. I promised that if I made it through, I would stop wasting my time repeating what I’d already proven I could do—building businesses, making money, and chasing external successes. Instead, I would fully embrace my true passion: creative expression. I’d always loved writing and storytelling, but I had neglected this gift for years. It was clear to me that this was my purpose, and I vowed to honor it if I got a second chance at life.

A Second Chance

The surgery was successful. The cancer hadn’t spread, and my most recent tests still show I’m cancer-free. That experience changed me. I started writing my first novel and working on a film project. For the first time, I felt like I was truly living, channeling my energy into creating something meaningful.

Living with Purpose

Today, I have a regular “day job” that keeps food on the table and a roof over my head. It also gives me the freedom to invest in my creative pursuits. I’ve never been happier. The joy I feel comes from knowing I’m honoring my essence and fulfilling my life’s purpose. Writing has become my passion, and every word I put on paper feels like a triumph.

A Message of Hope

Cancer forced me to confront my life in a way I never had before. It made me realize that I wasn’t truly living until I started pursuing what I was meant to do. My journey is proof that even in the face of adversity, there’s an opportunity to rediscover yourself, find your purpose, and live with intention.

Cancer was my challenge, but it also became my turning point. It gave me the clarity to embrace my destiny, and now I’m living a life of passion and purpose. For that, I am endlessly grateful.
