How can HuMOLYTE™ help during chemotherapy?*Dehydration and electrolyte loss that happen with diarrhea can often leave an individual feeling extremely tired. An injured gut can continue to leak electrolytes and make dehydration worse. Exploring the Protective Power of HuMOLYTE Against GI Injury from Chemotherapy
Gastrointestinal (GI) injury is a common and often severe side effect of many chemotherapeutic agents. However, a recent study suggests that HuMOLYTE, a supplement combining 2'-fucosyllactose and electrolytes, may offer significant protection against this issue.In the study Wistar rats, HuMOLYTE was administered in drinking water for five days prior to the introduction of the chemotherapeutic drug Irinotecan. The results were compelling: rats that received HuMOLYTE displayed markedly preserved intestinal morphology and experienced significantly reduced inflammation compared to those who only had drinking water. Notably, these rats also suffered much less from diarrhea, a common and debilitating side effect of Irinotecan.The protective benefits of HuMOLYTE extended beyond Irinotecan. Similar results were observed when the rats were treated with other chemotherapy drugs, including 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cisplatin. Across all cases, HuMOLYTE supplementation consistently led to better intestinal health and reduced GI distress.These findings highlight the potential of HuMOLYTE as a valuable supplement for minimizing GI injury in patients undergoing chemotherapy. By preserving intestinal integrity and reducing inflammation, HuMOLYTE could improve quality of life for those facing the challenges of cancer treatment. What is a medical food?
Medical foods are foods that are specially formulated and intended for the dietary management of a disease or a health condition that has distinctive nutritional needs that cannot be met by normal diet alone. Medical food must be consumed under the supervision of a licensed medical professional.
Is the 2’-FL HMO isolated from human milk?
No, the 2’-FL is not isolated from human milk although it was originally discovered as a complex sugar circulating in mother’s milk.
How much HuMOLYTE can I take in a day?
The recommended dose is 1 scoop (4.5 g/scoop) mixed in 8 -10 fl.oz of water, taken 2-3 times a day. Individual doses may vary.
Is HuMOLYTE™ free of lactose?
Yes, although traces of lactose can be present in the 2’-FL. Many individuals with lactose intolerance have safely consumed 2’-FL.
What is GRAS and how does FDA classify it?
GRAS is an acronym for Generally Recognized as Safe. FDA recognizes a food or a food additive to be GRAS based on scientific data. More information is available on FDA’s website.
If I am on chemotherapy, when should I start using HuMOLYTE™?
We recommend starting HuMOLYTE™ at least a day before starting chemotherapy. This allows electrolytes to build up and the 2’-FL to be present before the gut is subjected to chemotherapy. However, not all chemotherapy causes equivalent amount of gut cell injury, so results may vary.
Does HuMOLYTE™ have preservatives?
No, we have worked hard to keep preservatives out of all of our formulas.
Can I mix it with any beverage, hot or cold?
Yes. However, HuMOLYTE™ is naturally flavored to yield a fresh fruity beverage when mixed with cold water. Hence, it is recommended to be mixed with cold water prior to consumption.
Can 2’-FL HMO cause GI side effects?
Occasionally, some individuals can experience some flatulence (or gas) when 2’-FL is first consumed. In the clinical trial (Elison et al, 2016) where adults consumed from 5-20 grams of 2’-FL per day, the side effects were dose dependent and consisted of flatulence predominantly.

Rich Foreman is the current Chief Operating Officer at IGH Naturals.
